Writer's Clinic Columns

from the GWU Clinical Research Administration Program Newsletter

During the 2005-2006 academic year, the student newsletter published several Writers Clinic columns that may be of use to current students.

"Danglers--Obstacles to Clarity"discusses what I refer to as "stewed ladies" in honor of my freshman English professor at Seattle University. His example has stuck with me for 55 years: "Completely stewed, she took the prunes from the stove."
"The Editor's Curse" notes that none of the editors I know is able to turn off that part of the brain. We shudder at the misplaced apostrophe in "ham and egg's" on a menu. We roll our eyes at misspelled words on roadside signs. More to the point, that cursed column offers students some ideas to improve the odds that faculty will see clarity and logic in the papers they write.
Graduates of the Clinical Research Administration Program will write memos and emails on the job. They may be required to write SOPs or consent documents. "Know Your Audience" points out the importance of knowing who will read what you write.
Just because you hear it on public radio or read it in a respectable publication, doesn't mean that it's good grammar. That is the message in the column called "Monkey See, Monkey Don't."
"First Steps toward Publishing Your Paper" was a precursor to a Web page that includes publication requirements for some popular clinical research journals along with suggestions for Publishing a Student Paper.
